Fear,  Rebuilding Me

The Power of Letting Go

Letting go is one of the hardest lessons I’ve ever had to learn.

For most of my life, I clung to control; fists clenched, jaw tight, desperate to hold everything together. Control felt like safety. If I could dominate a room, a person or a fight maybe I wouldn’t have to feel the chaos inside me.

But the truth is, the tighter I held on, the more fear held me. Fear feeds on control. It whispers, “If you don’t grip harder, you’ll lose everything.”

I carried weights and shouldered difficulties I was never meant to bear; the weight of other people’s expectations, the weight of my own shame, the weight of battles I couldn’t win.

Letting go isn’t about giving up. It’s about releasing the things that drain us: the need to control what we can’t, the attachments that keep us trapped, the harsh judgments we place on ourselves and others. When we loosen our grip, we create space….space for clarity, for peace, for renewal.

I learned this during recovery. I had to surrender to the fact that I couldn’t outfight alcohol on my own. I had to let go of pride and admit I needed help. That surrender didn’t make me weaker it made me stronger. The same was true with cancer. I couldn’t control the diagnosis, or the chemo coursing through my veins. But I could control how I showed up to fight. I let go of what wasn’t mine to carry and in that surrender I found the strength to endure and win.

Letting go doesn’t mean you stop caring. It means you learn acceptance and trust life enough to move with it, not against it. It means you allow things to unfold without fear dictating every step. Here’s the paradox: in surrender / acceptance, you don’t lose power you gain it. The moment you let go of what you cannot control, you reclaim energy for what you can. That’s where resilience is born, not in the death grip of fear, but in the open hands of trust.
