Fear,  Rebuilding Me

Transforming Fear into Energy

Fear carries a charge. Left unchecked, it paralyzes. But if you learn to harness it, that same intensity becomes fuel.

On expeditions, I discovered this firsthand. In the Arctic, when a polar bear circled our camp, and attempted to enter our tent fear surged through me like electricity. My senses sharpened. Every sound, every movement, every detail came alive. That same surge of fear that could have crippled me also gave me the clarity to act.

At sea, rowing across the North Atlantic, fear was constant. Waves towered like buildings, winds howled like demons, and every creak of the boat reminded me how fragile we were. But fear also kept me awake, alert, and alive. It demanded my full focus, and in that ‘moment in time’ I found strength.

Even in darker places, staring down the barrel of a gun, fighting the cravings of addiction fear gave me energy. The mistake wasn’t feeling fear; it was misdirecting it. I used to burn that energy in violence or drown it in alcohol. Only later did I learn that fear, redirected, could drive me toward survival, toward growth, toward transformation.

Fear sharpens awareness. It heightens focus. It forces you to pay attention. When you stop fighting it and start working with it, fear stops being a wall and becomes a current you can ride.

The key is to ask: Where will I send this energy? Into anger? Into avoidance? Or into action that moves me forward?

When fear rises now, I treat it as fuel. I use it to dig deeper, push further, and face what once felt impossible. The very thing that tried to hold me back becomes the force that propels me on.

Fear isn’t the end of the story. It can be the beginning , the spark that ignites resilience, courage, and even creativity.
